As far as I know this works as it has since the MV3 days, with the 
exception of the prefix argument, which has nothing to do with 
databases.  You need to check that you actually have a database (DBM GDBM 
SQL, etc) configured and built, not just a source text file.  I think you 
have something amiss elsewhere.
