It should, at least if your meta display type is "imagehelper".

Make sure the metadata is:

code: products::image
type: imagehelper
prepend: http://__SAMPLEHTML__
outboard: images/items

code: products::thumb
type: imagehelper
prepend: http://__SAMPLEHTML__
outboard: images/thumb
