I had this very same problem with the areas not moving up and down the list normally and what I found when I went to edit the area table manually was that not all my areas had the same value for 'which_page'. So all I did was edit the areas table in the spreadsheet view and made each 'which_page' = 'all'. Then I changed the 'sort' values right next to that column to values from 00 to 09 in the order I wanted the columns displayed. Checking the IP blocks Alabanza owns and then checking the OS of the sites it hosts I see most of them run a very old version of Apache. Then your 'retail price' will go into the 'retail_price' field. Since the customer will be paying the sale price you will not need to change any Interchange code that does calculations. To reference these two fields it would be: [item-field price] [item-field retail_price] Once you add the field to your database it will show up in the admin interfacte when you edit the products database. If you'd like it to show up in the item editor you will need to add retail_price to the 'UI_ITEM_FIELDS' variable in the KNAR editor. We do that with assemblies of pre made baskets and selectable attibutes. The assembly has its own sku; the customer is buying that, not the individual ites; the item purchased is the "basket". The basket has a list of "contents" that the customer sees on his receipt. The vendor cares what is in the basket and we generate separately a report of what he needs on stock to fill it. That is done outside of minivend by looking at the "assemblies" table for the item and just pulling in all the subsidiary items and attributes. In simple thought with only IC tags do a loop search for catagory entries and on change print the catagory name to page. If you want sort alphabetically (looks more professional). Now while you are writing to page also write a link that searches for all entries in that category. This will return on the results page. The type of chowder is just an attribute as far as the item/basket are concerned, like size, color, etc... The vendor sees the attribute. The **outboard** pro-forma shipping report maps that to SKU for the vendor but that is only for his reordering purposes. The customer only gets the preordained chowder choices for that attribute. We use a total of three, in this case chowder, vegetable or shellfish. Basically, if a customer orders a basket there are a number of dimension to the basket. Each dimension has a set number of attributes. These attributes are then used to inform the vendor what they actually picked. So I would have something like Eggs <- Item Brown <- Item attribute White Free Range Breads Wheat White Italian Cookies Chocolate Sugar Butter I think I know how to do this now. Normal procedure is to do: src/cpan_local_install DBD::XBase After that, just use a DSN of dbi:XBase:products and away you should go, providing you have the file in tablename.dbf format in the products directory. (Make sure you have touched the tablename.sql file or set NoImport if you want to get the data from the file.) It will also use the memo files if they are produced.... Which necessarily implies that its already something they have ordered. What my client wants is one page where you have a series of drop down lists. After the customer has made their choices then they'll actually do the ordering. There is a reason for this in that the number of choices (5-7) for the number of items (again 5-7) are enough so that the customer might decide they don't want the basket after reviewing the choices. If they can only play with the choices *after* they've ordered the basket then I have to find someway assuring that the basket is removed automagically if they don't finalize the basket order. Now, being that each basket might just be one item in a larger order it gets a little complicated. And the more important reason is that the client wants it done that way. :\ I've a feeling this changes things. I might be able to do this with another database but I'd like to avoid as much added complexity as possible. Or are you saying your client wants to suggest the basket AFTER the shopper has indicated **some** of the items he wants? That he wants to select attributes **before** the item is picked? Not a problem either way, though I think you need to stand back and storyboard it vs just hacking away. It's a substantially more complex structure and a lot more work. See www.mainelyscrubs.com for something that works that way, where you select attributes independantly of the item. Still that does not prevent you from choosing an impossible combination. That's handled by the flypage logic that only presents possible combinations; downside is the possible items grow real fast when vendor makes minor changes in attributes (colors and prints in this case). Alternatively you get more joy using minivend to build a javascript page dynamically according to what is available. When I submit the new listing, all seems to go well however when I go to the storefront and look for the item, it is indeed in the new and brushes sections however the "product" field is blank and there is no link to the actual product page. If for example the product number was 28261, then a file called 28261.html should be created and a link to that file should be displayed in the "product" field on the category page where it is a member of. That is not happening however. What must be done to correct this? Minivend is basically just a very odd perl module. Building another module that handles javascript should let integrate into Minivend without a hassle (assuming it doesn't violate Safe). Anyway, I was able to get this to do what I wanted it to do. All the SKUs in the dropdown lists are placed in a stacked variable. On the basket, receipt and order pages I check if the item number is a custom basket. If it is I put the stacked variable in a loop list. I can then do whatever I want with this. This way I have one price and one entry in the basket representing multiple items. The biggest concern I had with using alternate pricing schemes, group orders, or attributes is what would happen users changed the quantity a custom basket item. If they are listed at a different price then I was worried that they'd get multiple items at an unauthorized discount. Admitedly the vendor could pick up on this but they shouldn't have to. To do so, I've created a separate 'coverage' database that can tell me what products are covered for a given insurance company. (It tells me with some simple SELECTS of 'coverage' and 'products' for certain matching keys). Further, I would like to present the user with the 'copay' price that is left over after calculating the insurance benefit. (i.e. Blue Cross pays 80% of product xyz, so your copay is only $10.00). It seems that I would end up with 2 related arrays, or 1 hash, depending on how I can store the data: covered_product_sku: 0001,0005,0014 covered_product_copay: 5.00,6.40,4.39 Then, when a user searches for a given category, I just check all the skus in that category, and throw out the ones that can't be found anywhere in 'covered_product_sku', so the user is left viewing the skus that *are* covered. I've read the Templates/Database pdfs back and forward, trying to grok this problem deeply. It looks like a lot of [perl] is going to be needed though. If anyone would care to comment on where I could get started as far as storing the hashes/arrays and accessing them from IC? After being able to access it, how would I grep it to see if a given value is present in the hash? The best I have been able to do so far is pseudocode. I have the mck working fine in test mode with the default pages and cart that come with the mck installation. I tested with the mck alone to make sure any subsequent errors were not caused by the mck. Using the P.O. option, I can complete a transaction just fine, but when I enabled the cybercash directives and attempted to do a cc checkout, I was got the following error message: search error: Limit subroutine creation: bad limit creation code in coordinated search, probably search group without search specification. at file://usr/lib/interchange/lib/Vend/Search.pm line 700. A search of the archives suggested a perl upgrade and a subsequent piece of information pointed to encryption. This was tested without pgp installed or enabled. Specifically, I get the following error message in process.html: Credit Card Information (Can't figure out credit card expiration.) SU - (to root, so your system will let you work) down load the Tar program to: /home/tmp gzip -dc ...(filename of program)... | tar xvf - This creates the directory: /home/tmp/interchange-4.x.x (to hold the setup software) /--- before you run setup you may need a few CPAN modules not included with the Raq (at mine didn't have them) use to install the extra modules: perl -MCPAN -e 'install Bundle::Interchange' \--- CD to the new directory and run ./configure (you might need to type perl configure) The setup program will prompt for the user ID, I choose 'admin' instead of root The setup program will also prompt where on the system you want to install the software... personally I put it in /home/interchange (which makes FTP easier on other systems, as I lockedout /usr and others from FTP) to restart the server you must use /...dir to interchange.../interchange/bin/restart I had a few permissions problems so here's a few commands I needed: chmod -R -v 775 /home/httpd/cgi-bin chown -r -v admin /home/httpd/cgi-bin chmod -R -v 775 /home/sites/sitexx/eShop chown -r -v admin /home/sitexx/eShop if 775 doesn't work you may need to use 777 (beware of security issues) if you notice I installed the catalogs in a seperate directory beside 'web' and 'certs' instead of IN 'users' or 'web' p.s. you don't need to enable CGI on the sites if you use a GLOBAL cgi-bin (as I did.../home/httpd/cgi-bin) The hardest part of using Raq's is that Cobalt made so many changes that it's difficult to know exactly how the have it running, and disscurage users from tampering with the system >Hi list, > >We have been using minivend/interchange on a caldera linux box. (showing the 404 in it's own look) now it appears it can't find the catalog, if you are just installing IC you don't need to back anything up (as you never changed anything) so continue if you have changed settings or customized your catalog rename the catalog to xxx-bak and continue Do you have a global CGI-BIN or do you have a CGI-BIN dedicated for this site? This is what usually cause the 404's, the bin you specified doesn't have the files or that bin is not used by the site. If you don't have a global bin, and don't want to make one, (Enable CGI on site, but not SSI...security issue) you need to make a directory to act as the cgi-bin but not called cgi-bin..suggest cgi_bin or cgibin chmod it as 771 rwx,rwx,--x chown admin [you can chmod to 777 while your testing/working...just put it back before you release the URL] when you run makecat use this dir as the cgibin i.e. /home/sites/sitexx/web/cgi_bin Why's: (Raq's seem to have CGI wrap problems on multiple directories called cgi-bin... don't use the name and one less problem to deal with. It's actually a conflict between the cobalt gui at ./cobalt and it's global file admin ...although you can activate a global cgi-bin without trouble) If using a Global bin (or want one): If you do want a global CGI-Bin, it is the same procedure on Raq's as on Red Hat6 If it has already been made and you ran makecat, you have a path problem in the links. P.S. Are there any other issues I'm missing? Someone offered to post a detailed upgrade experience to the mailing list, but an exhaustive search of the list archives failed to retrieve it. Creating Web communities on the Net is one of the more important social and business challenges of our time, but few people or companies seem to know how to do it with skill.
Into the fray comes Cliff Figallo, author of the useful no-nonsense Hosting Web Communities: Building Relationships, Increasing Customer Loyalty, and Maintaining a Competitive Edge, from Wiley.
Like many books about the Net these days, this one is cast in part as a business tool, probably for marketing reasons. And no doubt it will help individuals and companies -- especially small ones -- who want to establish viable Web communities.
But despite the practical packaging, the book takes aim at anybody who wants to join or run one.
Figallo knows whereof he speaks. Director of Community Development for Salon and its Table Talk discussion site, he spent six years as director of the The WELL, arguably the world's most influential and enduring virtual community. Figallo also helped develop AOL's first chat interface, "Virtual Places." That would put him in three especially coherent, community-minded Web enterprises.
Hosting a successful, bona fide Web community is rough.
As Figallo notes in his introduction, three themes recur: "The first is that community is a social constant looking to take hold in an environment of unrelenting change. The second is that trust is essential for community to happen. And the third is that meaningful relationships, far more than size, determine the success of online communities." Figallo's gift is that he sees the web community clearly from every perspective: host, user, designer, businessperson. He understands that at some point, community has to pay the bills in order to survive.
What is an online community? The word gets tossed around so much that, Figallo points out, the very term "virtual community" has been reduced to meaningless jargon. "A sense of belonging," is his answer. "Unless that feeling is there, no manager, advertiser, or promoter can claim the presence of community, no matter how much commonality exists in the users' interests and demographics."
"Community" is not synonymous with "harmony." Virtual communities don't have to be cheerful and sweet. But users must feel included. If you feel like you're part of a Web community, Figallo argues, you probably are.
Authoritative and common sensical, Figallo draws heavily on his own experience and scores of examples to make his case about flow, interface and atmosphere, helpfully backing up every point with illustrative URL's and examples.
He also offers counsel on how to preserve free speech and other online values while curbing the endemic flaming and erratic communications styles that have done in too many Web communities.
Hosts are essential to the building of relationships, he insists. They not only openly maintain the meeeting place -- arranging chat room schedules, starting and naming new discussion topics, keeping order and serving as librarian for online resources -- but they also act as "social adhesives" between the people who meet there. They help create certain essentials, including an interwoven web of relationships that last through time.
"Where these attributes exist," writes Figallo,"they solidify loyalty to the group and, therefore, to the Web site that support its activities. Members return regularly and in doing so, affirm the feeling that they belong, and maintain the relationship identified with the site. They come back because they are rewarded for doing so with valued facts, feelings, advice and opinions. As time passes, they help construct a history that is shared with others, adding to the feeling that they are part of some greater entity."
Figallo has come closer than most people in recent memory to defining the social structure that has to occur -- in conjunction with the design, interface and configurations he also outlines -- before the term "community" has any real meaning in connection with cyberspace.
One interesting chapter focuses on gathering business clientele into communities. Small business sites selling specialty items have become the mom-and-pop stores on the Internet, Figallo writes, selling to customers who can now be found anywhere there's a dial-up connection. Although companies like Amazon get most of the attention, the Net has spawned thousands of electronic shops, and it's reasonable, even necessary for these entrepeneurs to see their customers as members of "communities," because they want them to keep on returning.
In the past decade, countless "communities" have cluttered the Net, but only a handful are memorable, effective, or enduring. Figallo's publisher undoubtedly thought it could snare an audience by presenting the book so distinctly in business terms, but don't be put off by that.
This is a strong, convincing look at what it really takes to build enduring and yes, profitable communities online: the deployment of software and architecture and, above all, people, that permits humans to get to know one another and to keep coming back.

There are many sites that try to be too general. Like, a website community for the elderly, or for mothers. Well, when you get that general, there are 2000+ other sites that gearing for the same audience. You have to specialize in a single field, that doesn't rely on age, and have it be one where people want to check frequently for more information or help. One that I like to participate in is for Ford Ranger owners. A site where anyone of any age or sex can just talk about trucks, speed, modifications, cops, etc. You want to keep visiting because you want to see what the newest products are, and the newest trends to incorporate on.
You have to create a community based around something that people have pride in, rather it be their vehicles, their computers (hardocp), their homes, their stereos, etc. Regular 'teen hangout' communities are dying by the wayside because they just throw a thousand people into the mix and let them bleah on forever.

I have reservations about any book that claims to be able to define a "successful" web community, let alone how to duplicate that success. The most successful web communities seem to be happy accidents (see userfriendly and this esteemed site)

How many of you have a relationship with other members on Slashdot? It seems that Slashdot seems to have a set of phrases and jokes that we can use to communicate with each other, but do any of us really have a relationship with each other?

and if we do, does that mean we are going to have to start remembering each others birthdays, and having phone conversations where we yell at each other?

I think it's important to try less to create a community, and more to just think of it as offering a service to people, and you're just providing the space for them to make the community.
The userbase is far more important than the actual site, and the people running it need to know that. I'd imagine most people that read /. on a regular basis find the threads far more interesting than the articles themselves. The articles should be seen as just a foundation for discussion. Indeed most of the criticism that I see here about /. is started when the people running the site use their article postings as a chance to influence others with their own thoughts on the front page, rather than discuss it with the 'masses' in the threads.
I haven't been with /. since the beginning, only the past two years or so, so I can't really comment on the initial growing pains/patterns. But another communitish site that has been doing well that I have been participating in from early on, href="http://www.livejournal.com">livejournal, has been extremely good about implementing the users requests, and gaining a lot of loyalty. The admins realize that their users are the livelyhood, their best and only real advertising is word of mouth, and that the users will define what the community is, and their job is just to make sure the servers can handle it. They go so far as to encourage related software development from the userbase.
It seems to me that /. as a community sort of suffers from too singular a mentality in the leadership, clashing with a more varied and diverse user base than they imagine. Things like the relentless microsoft bashing and shameless linux promotion from the very people running the site seem to alienate many of the intelligent readers, just go through the threads about MS' DNS servers going down on wednesday. The usual argument is, it's taco's site, he can do whatever the hell he wants. That's ok, but /. presents itself as a community, which is more than just a website, and if it wants to continue to nurture that, it has to realize that it's serving other people now, not its creator.

1) streamline it.. i dont want to click through a million and a half checkboxes and free emails and popup banners to get to where I am trying to go. Try having the wigs that come up with your web concept actually *use* the sucker a few times before releasing it.

2) KISS.. not everyone on the net is a techno-genius..

3) Be realistic in your claims.

4) Have some kind of content review, so that people who go there can have other things removed if they dont like them. I am not advocating "censorship" per se.. but I am advocating that I am not going to hang out on an online community that has five health rooms, and a white power room right next to it. No-one is saying you cant say waht you want, just not *here*

5) Take some responsibility for your hosting/setup.
I used to hang out in an EFNET channel that was the closest thing I have ever seen to a "virtual community".. we had births, we had deaths, we had marriages (mine among them) between regulars.. it was *wonderful*.. parties, etc.. but the line got blurred when some people let the power get to their heads..

6) make it available to people who want to have *fun*.. if you have moderators, give them guidelines, put pick people with a good sense of humor.. not people who will remove you because they dont like your nick, your religious choice, or your jokes.. (within reason.. see # 4)

Thats my recipe.. can anyone implement it? In todays day of litigation and corporate fear of the former, probably not.

The guy's heritage with the WELL is not questionable, but I'm going to remain officially skeptical about the idea that commercial enterprises can just follow some guy's advice and build a functioning community.
People don't generally want to participate in a venture whose sole role is to make some other a$$hole wealthy; and hey, that's appropriate. People's own interests have to be taken into account. There has to be an emormously strong draw, a type of community that can't be found elsewhere. The geek community that makes up /., the intelligent nouveau liberals that makes up salon.com's table talk, etc. And even in these two cases, the commercial aspects have largely been focused elsewhere at the time the community started.
Communities have to feel free to post whatever they want, whenever they want, for example, to truly be effective at being communities. Commercial ventures won't withstand that sort of thing. They have to allow endless criticism of themselves, their products, their staff, their management... how many public companies would go for that?
Communities have to feel that they will continue to exist, that their feet won't be pulled out from under them because the last quarter was a bad one or because their favorite moderator was laid off.
Take a look at this list of mostly-successful communities running vBulletin and see how many are commercial in nature. There's a reason for that!
There's a reason why I wrote my sig the way I did -- and BTW, I wrote this sig a week ago, so this is not just some self-serving situation. My own community is over ten years old, having survived as a local BBS, a netted BBS, a telnet BBS and now finally (as of a week ago) a web-based community. Some of the people there have been there since the inception. If it successfully makes the transition to web-based community, it will be because the users wanted it, not me. And that's my final point: you simply can't force community into existence!

Good on him for work on The Well (I was a member there for years in the late 80s early 90s), but Virtual Places wasn't nearly AOL's first chat interface.

Virtual Places basically put some pictures around a web-based text chatroom. Zzzzz. I guess it was successful, if only to the people who sold it to AOL...

Initially I wanted to say that you should have a single select statement, something along the lines (note this isn't valid SQL): select unique category from products WHERE product_sku IN { SELECT hcpcs FROM coverage WHERE carrier_id = [scratch cust_carrier_id] } However, this doesn't fetch the proper copay information, it also assumes you have a database system that can support sub-select statements. The copay information is what throws me, and looking at your requirements, I can't see any other way to do it. However, there are a few things you can do to make your life easier. If your DB supports UNIQUE, use it... =) MySQL and others support this so your category selection would simply be: SELECT UNIQUE category FROM products WHERE product_sku = $allowed_products[$i] ORDER BY category (for a sorted unique category list). Also, I HIGHLY recommend you use a hash to store covered product information. %coverage_hash = { "0001" => "5.00", "0005" => "6.40", "0014" => "4.39", } It's a product_sku => copay hash. Also, use another hash to store category identifiers keyed to arrays of COVERED products they contain. %coverage_cats = { 1 => [001, 005, 006], 8 => [0014, 002], } Once you've generated this, don't bother doing it again. If the covered products/categories/copayments isn't likely to change during the suers session, generate this once to cut down on page latency. Have something similar to the following on the top of each page: [if !defined coverage_hash] [generate-coverage-hash] [generate-coverage-cats] [/if] Where the coverage_hash refers to the hash above (stored in a scratch variable) and generate-coverage-hash is a routine that will generate the above hash and store it in a scratch varaiable. generate-coverage-cats will generate the hash of available categoriee keyed to arrays of the covered products they contain. Now, allow the user to select one of the categories listed as a key in coverage_cats. Use the keys() perl function to get an array of these. Finally, when you want to display a page of all products in a category do something similar to the following: foreach $sku (@{ $coverage_cats{[SELECTED CATEGORY]} }) { # --> We have a covered product, SKU. # --> Copayment information is: $coverage_hash{$sku} } In closing, I highly recommend that you only generate these two hashes once if you can do so. Looking at this problem, it seems that a facility such as: [item-list products="[scratch array]"] is necessary, where the "array" scratch variable is an array of product SKU's. The piece added is: basket.action='[process-target secure=0]'; which changes how the form is processed (non-secure in this case) when continue shopping is pushed. It will still process secure when Checkout is pressed. My question now, does the button tag allow for java commands to be passed as arguments? If it doesn't it may be a good addition to be able to specify either generic commands or atleast set the form's action. Mike do you think this is a good addition to this tag?
