[area] always puts in the CGI_URL.  There may come a time when you don't 
want all your links to be forced to a given absolute URL rather than the 
relative that they are with regular <A> links.  If you use [area], you can 
make 1 change in catalog.cfg or variables.txt without having to go through 
any of your source. IMHO,
