Interesting.

The problem does seem to be limited to be limited to your setup,
as I can't reproduce it on other servers I've tried.  Perhaps it's
a problem with your Apache setup.

Can you try adding the following line to your <head> section.

    <meta name="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1">

Change the charset if it's not appropriate.
