[ic] Modular code help NEWBIE

I've searched the lists to no avail on some decent examples of working 
modular menus.  Excuse me if this is a basic function and I have the answer 
right in front of me.  I'm trying to have a phantom sku example tied to 
multiple skus to lessen the number of items in search results.  Tying these 
to a drop down is the easy part but connecting the drop down items to 
different skus is the trick.  I'm using the function in the admin GUI but 
when I apply it no go?  Is there at least a good ABC for using this.  Thank
