You run IC as httpd. Well, you could do, but I recommend to use
either a dedicated ("locked") account without password, or to use
the user who owns the catalog (who owns the web pages/CGI doesn't
matter, make sure it works :)).

Surely httpd user cannot read or eXec /home/alex/catalogs/demo.
Either chown it, or configure it via group membership. Please
note, that IC needs to write at least the database files, usually
in "products" directory (here you'll find not only products).
Same of course for logs and maybe others.
Well, just adjust permissions until IC starts :)
