I would recommend you go to the Admin->Design->Site Layout and change
the search type for your left side categories.  By default they are
setup to be a simple search (ie "category=SomeCat").  You could change
that to be a complex search type (ie "co=yes sf=category se=SomeCat
sf=status se=Archive op=!~").  You can get the full details on doing
