The line in banner.txt now reads:

books   one     1       0       [page search="fi=products/sf=category/
se=disposables/sp=results/ml=30"]<img src="ajm0930.jpg" border="0"
alt="Books"></A>

and I am calling it in index.html with:
[banner category=books]

On the web page, I am getting the code in banner.txt [page search .... to
the closing ']'. Then I get the picture. Nothing more. and nothing is hot.

Just for grins, I changed the 'search' to 'scan' with the same results.
