[ic] Excluding items from display - sometimes

If you aren't using IC for inventory / item tracking:

Add an "if eligible" [if] show the options as a radio or other
select[/if]
Log the variable in /etc/log_transaction and you're done.

That's the easy way and you're done.

For a real method, what I'd do is set the item to inactive, have search
pages exclude inactive's and have your fly pages remove the "add to
cart" button from those items where inactive = 1. Then it can only be
"purchased" if eligible. You'd also have to check if another free item
is in the cart, because people will try to hit back and select a second
freebie.

OK, here is one for you all.

I have a special running. Spend $25 and get something free. There are
two ways I would love to handle this. The first being what I would like
and the second is what I would love!

1. When you do a search of products, the free products shows up. It
does notate the rules to getting a free product, but I would rather NOT
have this come up. I have a specials list on the left hand navigation
that has all the items they can choose from...for free. How do I keep
the search from seeing this product?

2. Now, what I would REALLY like is when they go to check OUT, that is
when they get the "Alert" or notification that they are eligible for the
free product. They would then go to a page and make their selection and
go back to checkout.

Any thoughts? At least on number one.
