[ic] OT -- Manners - purpose of this list

I think some of you have forgotten the purpose of this list. Or maybe
it's me that doesn't understand it. I thought we were all here to help
each other by sharing experience. Some of us are beginners, some have
been using minivend/exchange for a few years now, some are very
experienced. It seems some of you have forgotten what it was like when
you were new to interchange or minivend and how it was like to be
somewhat or very confused. Some of you seem to have forgotten what it
was like when you set out to design your first web page and were lucky
to get the formatting even half as good as you wanted it.

I've noticed today, as well as a few times in the last few months where
someone posted a link to his site hoping for some constructive help and
instead was ripped apart. One guy needed some help with something and
the advice given to him by someone on this list was to basically give up
all hope of ever being able to administer his own site and hire someone
to do the work for him. That concept excludes any ideas of that person
ever learning anything if he just gives up before even starting. And
maybe not everyone is in the financial position to pay for an outsider
to do their work.

Today's insults were to a person who sells fun things and had a 'fun'
theme to his site. Some of you wanted to insult him on his choice of
themes because you didn't personally like the idea, maybe it wasn't
'corporate' enough for you -- too darn bad -- for YOU. Maybe it was his
client's decision to make it that way, or maybe his, but at least he has
a plan and put it together. How many of you who insulted this person
had totally perfect web sites when you first started? How many of you
have had to put up a site based on the way your client wanted when you
thought it should be some other way?

Feel free to flame me for posting this. Insult my work while you're at
it, any low blow will do. But if you choose to start such a war, be
prepared for a return volley, because that's how it goes in war, each
side has to try to hurt the other more than the last time. And remember,
it was you who decided to wage such a war.

--OR--

How about us all working together to help each other do better with our
sites. Each of us who has something to contribute go back to doing so
for those who could really use the assistance. Many of us here have
something to offer, be it minor or major, be it about interchange
directly, or about web site design in general, or about operating and
configuring a server, or maybe even business or legal advice.
