The interch user needs no login capabilities. It does need a shell
environment. My interch user has an /etc/passwd entry of:

interch:x:104:104:Interchange server:/var/lib/interchange:/bin/bash

and the line in /etc/shadow is marked to prevent login.

Use a script like the one in the startups on the rpm. Root runs it then
changes to interch. You can also start it from
/usr/lib/interchange/bin/restart as root. It will also change to user
interch.
