I've just finished 30mins ago the installation of a fresh Perl into my
freshly installed Debian box (sarge). Just get the latest stable Perl,
unpack, and run ./Configure -des, then make && make test and last make

Remember to check that you have the gdbm-package installed (I think it's the
libgdbm-dev package)
