You're on the right track, but are coming to the wrong conclusion.  It's
not accessing the db that's the problem, it's something else.

Which component is giving you the problem?

Not much, it all uses DBI and DBD::mysql.

All of them but the small cart, full cart, small search. All others cause 
the error and not one mention of it in any of the error logs, even with all 
the debug turned on. Something is breaking before it even gets recorded as 
broken.

I just figured it was a db thing, outside of the admin section, because it 
is each and every component that touches the db that causes the error.

I know that it doesn't matter if I use to, left, or right or any combo. They 
all work unless you use promo,affiliates,random,verticle category, etc.

What really gets me is the lack of errors reported.
