5.8.7 is fine as long as it's non-threaded. If you want to run a
threaded perl then it needs to be 5.8.8.

The 30% performance loss comes from running a threaded perl, not from an
older perl.

If your /usr/local/bin/perl is non-threaded then I would leave it.
