That would be the most likely explanation.  I can't see any way that
that individual variable would be targeted for lower-casing in the
admin system, as the same variable edit page is used for all of the
variables.

I have closed the bug report that was raised for this issue.  If it
somehow reoccurs in the future then the report can be reopened.
