Could it be an UTF-8 thing? Maybe you should convert your config- etc. 
files to utf8?

iconv --from-code=ISO-8859-1 --to-code=UTF-8 oldfile.cfg > newfile.cfg

Did you try to import a db-dump and hook up your catalog directly 
(without importing the tables first)?
