[ic] Problem with adding parts to an item

I'm using interchange 5.5.0 and have found a problem with adding parts
to an item using the parts tab.
I created two test products in items. One named T123HK and one named
12345.
No catagories selected for either.
Item T123HK will not let me add a part via the parts tab.
Item 12345 lets me add parts.

Does anyone know a simple solution for this? I have several items with
letters in the item number and I want to add parts to these items, but
interchange will not let me.
