userdb, login and an extra check

hello

We are using userdb to restrict access to certain pages and it is working 
good.
We want to add extra functionality here, but need some advise.

We want to make 2 groups of users with different access possibilities. Each 
group has a set of pages that can only be accessed by users of that group. 

We don't want to use the ACL field because every combination of a page and 
a user is an extra line in de userdb table.

Is it possible to add an extra field (something like a type of user) in the 
userdb and check this field at login? 
Or is there another solution that can be used?
