[mv] sending subtotal to variable

Dont know what I am doing wrong:

[set cartsubtotal interpolate=1][subtotal noformat=1][/set]
[scratch cartsubtotal]

....produces nothing. 

I tried it without the interpolate, also tried the seti
and name=cartsubtotal in the set.  Shouldnt this work, it seems
so simple.  Is it that [subtotal] wont pass to a scratch variable
or did I miss something. I need to put it into a variable for other
uses and dont want to rely on just calling [subtotal] each time.
I checked error.log for any clues but nothing.
