These are not interchange related problems.   I use mandrake also, I like
the mandrake distribution but I do not like the way they do their
"non-standard" perl install.  Although the interchange configure script is
sending the message, it is not the problem (dont shoot the messanger).
Here is my 2 cents.

1) re-install your mandrake and choose "developer" configuration and make
sure you install all the developer tools. (Which will include make)

Ensure your perl install is good by installing Bundle::Interchange from
cpan.
