so I advise against their use; I prefer individual "add to cart"
buttons.
I can see how such a list could be useful in certain situations,
but I've never had to design a website where a "buy list" form
would be desirable.
I haven't compared the munge_quantity code in 4.8 to that in 5.0, but
suspect that if any changes have been made then they would be minimal.
I'd still advise you to copy/paste the 5.0 version - just to be safe.

Interchange 5 doesn't depend upon munge_quantity unless you need to code
a "buy list" facility. It's the same as 4.8 in that respect. I don't
think that it will cause a problem, as there are enough websites out
there that look and feel like a stock Foundation demo (with a slightly
different background colour) and they seem to work ok. :-)
