Hi,

I would recommend linux+kde 1.92 beta (20000720 works fine), plus
apache webserver, plus a modem (can be cheap but not winmodem-alike) to access
each of these machines, plus some dialup server program. VNC is not
very good over modem link, so better use ssh+scp.

But be careful - ask to not power down these machines without
'halt'ing them (this can be done thru menu), otherwise linux can loose some 
files.
